A United Nations-contracted cargo plane crashed on Thursday while attempting to land at an air-strip in El-Barde, located in Somalia’s South West State, the UN Office in Somalia said.

At least one person has been confirmed to have dead while two others were injured, the UN said in a statement.

The aircraft, engaged in transporting crucial humanitarian supplies for the World Food Programme, tragically veered off the runway during the landing.

The United Nations Office in Somalia promptly expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and colleagues of the deceased, extending wishes for a swift recovery to the injured individuals.

“The United Nations in Somalia expresses its condolence to the family and colleagues of the victim, and wishes a speedy recovery for the injured,” the UN office in Somalia stated.

As the gravity of the situation unfolds, the United Nations says it is actively collaborating with the contracted airline company, as well as federal and South West State authorities, to initiate a thorough investigation into the incident.
