Mogadishu (Hornlife) — During the spring rains, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns that serious rains in 22 districts could affect up to 770,000 people. Heavy flooding has not been reported, but the continuous rain is increasing fears about potential floods, particularly in Hirshabelle and South West.

To prepare for potential flooding, humanitarian organisations have dispatched 51 boats to evacuate and provide aid to affected communities. These locations are also experiencing moderate to severe rainfall, as indicated by the weather forecast, requiring immediate and effective preventative activities.

Despite these climatic problems, Somalia is still dealing with the problem of displacement, with over 1.5 million people forcefully displaced from their homes over the last seven years. More than 207,850 people were evicted in 2023 alone, mostly from the Banadir region, which has the highest number of displaced people. Many refugees in the Kaxda and Dayniile districts of the Banadir region receive less humanitarian aid than the national average, aggravating the situation.

Somalia received 1.4 million oral vaccinations to address the ongoing outbreak of acute watery diarrhoea (AWD/cholera). This vaccine is being distributed in five vulnerable districts, including Bosaso, Dayniile, Mahaday, Burhakaba, and Balcad.

Somalia’s 2024 humanitarian response plan states that a budget. According to Somalia’s 2024 emergency response plan, a budget of 1.6 billion is needed to meet the needs of the 6.9 million people in need of assistance, with 5.2 million getting direct support.
