A Call for Unity: Somalia Must Stand Together Against Terrorism

By Hassan Ali Khaire

The recapture of Masaajid Cali Gaduud, a key town in HirShabelle state’s Middle Shabelle region, by AlQaeda-linked terrorist group Al-Shabaab on Wednesday (March 26 2025) is a painful reminder of the ongoing struggle for Somalia’s security.

This area, liberated two years ago through the bravery of the Armed Forces and local heroes, came at a heavy cost—patriots who gave their lives for the freedom of their people and nation.

Terrorism remains the greatest threat to Somalia’s progress, targeting its people and lands with relentless aggression. Every setback in this fight is not just a loss of territory but a blow to all Somalis, as we are bound together by a shared destiny.

It is crucial that we reject narratives that frame such incidents as failures of an individual, a group, or a specific clan. This only serves to divide us, weaken national unity, and embolden those who seek to destroy our country.

Instead, we must recognize that past victories against terrorism were achieved through collective effort—citizens and government working side by side. Our strength lies in unity, and it is the only way forward.

I urge President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to take decisive leadership in guiding the nation through this crisis, to set aside divisive politics, and to initiate a national dialogue for Somalia’s salvation. A united front is essential in reclaiming our lands and defeating the forces of extremism.

As we enter the last ten days of the blessed month of Ramadan, I call on all Somalis to pray for our nation and its people. Let us stand in unwavering support of our Armed Forces and all efforts aimed at securing a peaceful and terror-free Somalia.
