MOGADISHU, Somalia – Militant group Al-Shabaab has recently ramped up its operations, introducing new strategies in its ongoing war against the Federal Government of Somalia. Over the past few days, the intensity of clashes and insurgent movements has significantly increased, raising fresh security concerns.
According to MP Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu, a member of Somalia’s Federal Parliament, the group is now focusing its efforts on regions where development projects, particularly oil exploration, have been announced. In an interview with Universal TV, Moalimuu noted that Al-Shabaab often targets areas associated with progress.
“Wherever there’s talk of oil exploration or development, Al-Shabaab is quick to move in. Their activities are heavily concentrated in those areas,” said Moalimuu, emphasizing the group’s calculated targeting of strategic economic zones.
The MP further alleged that foreign elements are embedded within the group, using Somalia’s internal conflict to advance their own agendas.
“These individuals are not fighting for the interest of Somalis. Foreigners are involved, and their ideology is rooted in external agendas,” he added.
Moalimuu also pointed out that Al-Shabaab has outmaneuvered the government in the information war, drawing inspiration from global extremist networks.
“They’ve copied the media tactics of international groups. When it comes to propaganda, they’ve beaten us,” he remarked.
These comments come at a time when Al-Shabaab is reportedly concentrating its forces in the Middle Shabelle region—an area identified for government-led oil exploration efforts.
