JOWHAR, Somalia – In a coordinated military operation today, Somali National Army units, specifically the 175th Division of the 17th Eagle Brigade and the 146th Division of the 14th October Brigade, launched a successful attack against Al-Shabaab militants in the Lower Shabelle region.
The well-planned and executed military operation, which took place in an area, approximately 5 kilometers from Awdheegle District, targeted a known gathering point of the Al-Shabaab group. The assault led to a brief exchange of gunfight.
According to a government press release, the operation resulted in significant casualties for Al-Shabaab, with the forces catching the militants during a strategic meeting. The statement detailed that the attack was initiated after intelligence confirmed the presence of key Al-Shabaab leaders and fighters at the location.
“The precision of our forces led to a major setback for Al-Shabaab, disrupting their plans to further destabilize the region,” the press release stated. It also mentioned that Al-Shabaab had been planning an attack on the Awdheegle district, which was thwarted by today’s military action.
The operation, code-named “Gorgor,” involved specially trained units known for their effectiveness in counter-insurgency operations. The government has not disclosed specific casualty figures but described the operation as a significant blow to Al-Shabaab’s capabilities.
As of now, there has been no immediate response or confirmation from Al-Shabaab regarding the attack. The situation in the Jowhar-Awdheegle area is reported to be stable, with no further incidents following the operation.
This military success marks another chapter in the ongoing efforts by the Somali government to root out extremist elements within its borders, enhancing security and stability in the region.
