Somalia: Govt Forces Launch Major Offensive Against Al-Shabaab Near Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali government forces, including units from Haramcad, Military Police, and the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), initiated a significant military operation today against Al-Shabaab militants near Mogadishu. The operation focused on newly established Al-Shabaab centers in areas including Ali Mahdi Farm and Sabyo, which connect the Banadir, Lower Shabelle, and Middle Shabelle regions.

Led by NISA’s Banadir regional commander Abdifitah Ibrahim Shawey, alongside local officials, the forces aimed to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s infrastructure and control in these strategic locales. Dayniile District Governor Omar Mohamud Mahad Alle confirmed the operation’s success in media statements, highlighting the destruction of several Al-Shabaab bases and makeshift courts.

“We are here with different units of our army, operating for over 24 hours, targeting a false court where these evil men used to oppress people,” Governor Alle stated. He further declared the area cleared of Al-Shabaab presence, promising ongoing efforts to prevent the militants from re-establishing control.

The operation was prompted by recent intelligence indicating increased Al-Shabaab activities in the region. Additionally, Al-Shabaab militants had earlier this week impeded about 40 public vehicles near Ali Mahdi Park, demanding ransom, which escalated tensions and necessitated the government’s response.

Security experts urge the federal government to continue the pursuit of Al-Shabaab into the forested areas near Afgoye to ensure the safety of Mogadishu’s residents and those in adjacent districts. This operation marks a critical step in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to stabilize the region and combat the influence of Al-Shabaab.
