GAALKACYO, Somalia – Puntland Security Forces (PSF) showcased Abdalla Mustaf Abu-Deir, known as Salim, an ISIS operative, in a public display following his capture in the Almiskad mountains of the Bari region, illustrating the extensive recruitment network of Daesh.
In a video broadcast by PSF, Abu-Deir, who once pursued engineering studies in Sakhnin, Israel, provided insights into his path to joining Daesh. He described being greeted by five Daesh operatives upon his arrival in the mountains, who then led him to Istiqbal for indoctrination and training.
This event has not only sparked widespread debate on why an individual from Israel would choose Somalia, particularly over Palestine amid recent conflicts, but it also sheds light on the broader recruitment tactics employed by ISIS. The capture of Abu-Deir comes at a time when intelligence reports indicate an expected surge in foreign fighters aligning with ISIS in Puntland, particularly in its remote mountainous areas.
The operation by PSF underscores Puntland’s ongoing efforts to combat the rise of foreign fighters and dismantle the operational capabilities of ISIS within its borders. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the global reach of extremist recruitment, highlighting the challenges faced by local forces in countering such threats.
