Ethiopia Sentences 60 Al-Shabab Militants to Prison Terms

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The Ethiopian government has sentenced 60 members of the al-Shabab militant group to prison terms ranging from 2.5 to 18 years following their capture during clashes with Ethiopian forces. The militants were apprehended two years ago after crossing into Ethiopia from Somalia, where they fought with regional forces.

According to reports, the group intended to set up a base in Ethiopia’s Somali region, aiming to exploit local security weaknesses. The Federal Police stated that among those sentenced, two senior al-Shabab leaders were handed life imprisonment, while others received sentences based on their roles within the group.

The operation leading to their arrests took place in July 2022 in the Afdheer region. Additionally, Ethiopian authorities have confirmed ongoing investigations into another six cases, which involve 95 more individuals suspected of al-Shabab affiliations.

This action underscores Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism within its borders and across the region, particularly against groups like al-Shabab, which has been a significant security threat in the Horn of Africa.
