MOGADISHU, Somalia – The American-trained Somali army’s commandos launched an offensive against a main Al-Shabaab base in the central region of Galgadud under Galmudug state, officials said on Thursday.
As many as 22 other Al-Shabaab members have been wounded, including some sustained critical injuries during the operation by the SNA’s Danab brigade that targeted the militant hideout in Gerile area, which lies north of Galgadud region.
In a statement, the Somali military said the troops ransacked the Al-Shabaab base and still pursuing the fleeing militants, who are on the run to escape from being killed or captured alive. There was no immediate confirmation from independent sources or Al-Shabaab.
Somali army with the support of foreign soldiers and local clan militia are making gains in central Somalia after seizing control of key areas from Al-Shabaab since the start of the all-out military assault in mid-2022 under the order of President Hassan Sheikh.
