Somalia: SNA carries out offensive against Al-Shabaab on Gedo-Bay region’s border

GARBAHAREY, Somalia – The Somali National Army [SNA] conducted a planned operation against Al-Shabaab in several areas located on the border between Gedo and Bay regions to ensure security and avert possible attacks, according to the military officials.

The country’s information ministry said the army dealt a major blow to Al-Shabaab during the assault which targeted the group’s main hideouts and killed several fighters, who were trained and prepared to execute attacks on military bases in the two regions.

“Our troops destroyed Al-Shabaab bases and killed several militants, including senior commanders,” said the ministry, adding that security of the roads has been beefed up to facilitate public travel.

Speaking to the state media, the commander of the 47th brigade of the army Ahmed Mohamed confirmed that the operation will continue until the Al-Shabaab threat in the border areas is eliminated. There was no statement from Al-Shabaab regarding the operation.

Somali army along with clan militia and foreign partners have been carrying out a joint offensive against Al-Shabaab which saw the liberation of key areas in Galmudug and HirShabelle states since 2022 when president Hassan Sheikh declared an all-out war.
