MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Intelligence and Security Agency [NISA] said it has detained an Al-Shabaab member in Mogadishu’s Bakaro market amid increasing targeted killings of businessmen over CCTV camera installations.
In a statement sent to the newsrooms, NISA announced the successful capture of the militant following a suspect over his movements inside the market, where there is an alert of planned Al-Shabaab assassinations against the traders who applied government order to install CCTV cameras on their businesses.
“NISA agents succeeded in arresting an Al-Shabaab fighter attempting to commit insecurity act in Bakaro market within Mogadishu,” reads the NISA statement in part.
The intelligence agency added that the detained militant was a member of an assassination squad sent to Mogadishu to carry out killings against Somali business owners after rejecting to heed to Al-Shabaab order banning the CCTV camera installations.
Photos circulated on social media showed an armed man being arrested by the NISA agents after a tip-off from the people in the area, who suspected him of trying to kill a trader. The capture of the unidentified Al-Shabaab member comes amid fear among the business people over the ongoing killings.
The Somali government said it would protect the businesses and avert Al-Shabaab assassinations in Mogadishu, to win the hearts and minds of the people, who obeyed its directives regarding the security CCTV cameras.
