MOGADISHU, Somalia – Al-Shabaab has suffered the loss of a senior commander, who has been killed in a military operation in the country’s Bay region, the defense ministry said on Wednesday.
“Somali National Armed Forces neutralized Osman Mohamed Kadiye, a senior leader of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group,” said Somalia’s Ministry of Defense in a statement obtained by The HornLife.
The covert military operation took place in Labatan Jirow, Bay region, and the targeted mission underscores our commitment to dismantling extremist threats, added the ministry without providing further information about how the raid took place and casualties on the army side.
Al-Shabaab despite losing ground, still controls large swathes of territory in south and central Somalia. The Somali government claimed it pushed the group out of key strong areas and killed thousands of fighters during the first phase of the all-out war that started in 2022.
