HARGEISA, Somaliland — President Muse Bihi Abdi of Somaliland on Thursday hosted a meeting at the presidential palace with foreign ambassadors accredited to Somalia, who had come to observe the region’s presidential election held on November 13.
The delegation included representatives from the United Kingdom, the European Union, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, the Czech Republic, and France.
During the meeting, the diplomats expressed their appreciation for the conduct of the electoral process in Somaliland, highlighting it as a model of democratic engagement. They encouraged all candidates to accept the forthcoming election results, which are anticipated within a week.
President Bihi, who is seeking re-election, faces opposition from candidates from the Waddani and UCID parties, both vying for the presidency for the next five years.
The ambassadors praised the Somaliland populace for their maturity and urged them to continue setting an example for other African nations and the global community through their peaceful electoral participation.
Accompanying President Bihi were Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Dr. Isse Keyd and Special Envoy Adna Adan.
Among the diplomats present were:
- Mike Nithavrianakis and Ilyas Malek from the UK,
- Karin Johanson and Thomas Kieler from the European Union,
- Steen Sonne Andersen and Gertrud Birk from Denmark,
- Joachim Waern and Johan Svenson from Sweden,
- Mirko Giuletti and Natalie Frei from Switzerland.
This interaction underscores international interest in Somaliland’s political developments, despite its lack of formal recognition as an independent state.
