Somalia: SCAA Says Airlines Avoid Kismayo After Alleged Airport Incident

MOGADISHU – Somalia’s civil aviation authority (SCAA) reported on Tuesday that airlines are avoiding flights to Kismayo, citing an alleged incident at the city’s airport the day before.

According to the SCAA, a Halla Airline plane was “hijacked” and had its communication equipment taken on Monday, prompting an investigation. The statement did not name any suspects, but Kismayo airport falls under the control of the Jubaland regional administration.

Amid these allegations, flights to and from the Jubaland region were suspended on Tuesday, sources said.

Should these claims be substantiated, it would echo a strategy employed by the former administration of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo when he controversially ousted Ahmed Madobe from the leadership of Jubaland in 2019.
