Somalia: India Seeks to Simplify Visa Process for Somali Medical Travelers

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A delegation from India’s embassy in Kenya has arrived in Mogadishu to discuss simplifying visa procedures for Somali patients seeking medical treatment in India, signaling a push to enhance bilateral relations and facilitate health tourism.

Somalia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, welcomed the delegation, highlighting the need for an easier visa system due to the absence of an Indian diplomatic mission in Somalia. This has previously compelled Somalis to undertake costly and time-consuming journeys to countries like Ethiopia or Kenya for visa applications.

Over the past six months, Somali authorities have been working to overhaul these procedures. The proposed solution includes potentially establishing a consular service in Mogadishu or utilizing a more efficient online application system, which would ease the process for Somalis, many of whom travel to India for its advanced medical care at relatively lower costs.

Minister Fiqi emphasized the critical nature of this initiative, pointing out the health crisis many Somalis face, which could be alleviated with better access to Indian healthcare. This move is also viewed as a way to deepen diplomatic and economic ties between India and Somalia, with health tourism being a key area of mutual interest.

The discussions were optimistic, with both nations looking forward to further talks to refine the new visa system. Alongside visa issues, the delegation also explored opportunities for educational and economic collaborations, indicating a broader strategy to bolster relations.
