Galmudug Police Arrest Suspects in Clan Killings

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Galmudug State Police Command has announced a renewed crackdown on those responsible for recent clan-related murders, including their accomplices, as part of broader efforts to end revenge killings and strengthen security across the region.

Brigadier General Khalif Abdulle Maalin, the Galmudug State Police Commissioner, confirmed that several individuals have been apprehended in connection with a series of brutal killings in different parts of Galmudug.

Among the arrested suspects are those accused of murdering a mother and her daughters in a harrowing crime that sparked widespread public outrage.

“These were senseless and inhumane killings,” said General Maalin. “We will ensure that every individual involved—whether directly or indirectly—faces the full force of the law. Justice will be served not only for the sake of the victims but to deter others who might consider committing similar atrocities.”

The police chief emphasized that the Galmudug administration is fully committed to breaking the cycle of clan-based violence, which has long plagued Somalia’s central regions.

He stressed that impunity for such crimes will no longer be tolerated and that all those responsible, including those who harbor or assist perpetrators, will be brought before the courts.

A Surge in Clan-Based Revenge Killings

In recent months, revenge killings—rooted in longstanding clan grievances—have been on the rise in Galmudug and neighboring regions. These acts of violence have targeted a wide range of individuals, including women, community elders, and other innocent civilians.

Local authorities have strongly condemned these killings, labeling them a direct threat to peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts underway in the region.

The surge in such crimes has posed a significant challenge to the fragile stability in parts of central Somalia. Efforts to rebuild trust among communities and foster unity have been repeatedly undermined by retaliatory violence, often fueled by cycles of vengeance passed down through generations.

Community Cooperation Vital to Success

General Maalin called on community leaders, elders, religious figures, and especially the youth, to support law enforcement by reporting those responsible for inciting or committing acts of violence.

He highlighted that cooperation between citizens and the police is essential to preventing further bloodshed and restoring lasting peace.

“We cannot do this alone,” the police chief said. “Our security forces are dedicated and capable, but we need the public to stand with us. Reporting suspects, sharing information, and rejecting violence are key steps in defeating this culture of revenge.”

The Galmudug Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians and upholding justice, vowing to continue operations aimed at arresting and prosecuting individuals who threaten the safety and cohesion of society.

As part of broader stabilization efforts, the Galmudug administration has been working closely with federal authorities, community leaders, and civil society groups to address the root causes of clan-based conflicts and promote dialogue among rival groups.
