NAIROBI, Kenya – Shock and outrage are sweeping across Kenya following the assassination of Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo, who was gunned down late Tuesday night in the heart of Nairobi.
Ong’ondo was reportedly driving through a busy street in the capital when two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle. The attack happened shortly after he left Parliament, and police believe he may have been followed. The assailants managed to escape on a Fekon motorbike.
The MP died at the scene, while his driver miraculously survived the shooting and is now cooperating with investigators. Police say they’ve launched a full-scale manhunt, but so far, no arrests have been made.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear. Authorities have yet to confirm whether it was politically motivated, a personal vendetta, or something else entirely.
Ong’ondo was a member of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), led by long-time opposition leader Raila Odinga. In a statement, Odinga condemned the killing as a “cowardly act” and called for swift justice.
The murder has reignited concerns over the safety of Kenyan politicians. It also comes not long after another high-profile case involving Yusuf Hussein Ahmed, a local assembly member from Wajir County. He was abducted months ago in Nairobi and mysteriously returned home one night, dropped off by masked men. His case, like many others, remains unresolved.
As questions mount, Kenyans are demanding answers: Who is behind the targeted attacks on lawmakers? And why are political figures being hunted? For now, those questions remain painfully unanswered.
