GAROWE, Somalia (Horn Life) – Puntland opposition parties have accused President Said Abdullahi Deni of signing what they call an illegal and unconstitutional agreement with Somaliland.
In a joint statement on Tuesday, the Mideeye, Mustaqbal, Sincad, and Ifiye parties claimed that President Deni had “unilaterally” entered into a security cooperation deal with Somaliland during a meeting in Nairobi, Kenya.
The opposition argued that the pact violates Puntland’s constitution and undermines the region’s sovereignty.
“This agreement does not protect the interests of Puntland, nor is it in accordance with the Constitution of the Government of Puntland,” the statement read.
The deal, announced on Sunday, reportedly commits both Puntland and Somaliland to cooperate on security matters and counterterrorism efforts. Puntland recognized Somaliland’s right to self-determination, while Somaliland praised Puntland’s role in combating extremist groups.
However, opposition parties warned that the Nairobi deal risks dividing Somalia and legitimizing secessionist ambitions.
“This agreement only serves the idea of dividing Somalia,” the joint statement said.
The interim administration of Northeastern Somalia, based in Lasanod, also criticized the accord, describing it as evidence that both Puntland and Somaliland “do not support the existence” of the Northeastern administration.
Puntland’s government has not yet responded to the opposition’s claims.
