The Somali National Army (SNA) has retreated from the strategic town of Adan Yabaal in Middle Shabelle following intense fighting with Al-Shabaab militants on Wednesday. The loss marks a serious setback in the ongoing campaign to reclaim and secure central and southern Somalia.
Background: A Strategic Stronghold
Adan Yabaal, one of the largest towns in Middle Shabelle, lies approximately 220 kilometers north of Mogadishu. The town had been under government control since 2022, when SNA forces, alongside local fighters, successfully liberated it from Al-Shabaab.
However, the recent offensive has reversed those gains, with Al-Shabaab now claiming full control of the town—boosting their strategic presence in central Somalia.
Escalation of Offensives
Over the past two months, Al-Shabaab launched coordinated attacks from both the southwest and north, aiming to connect their strongholds across Middle Shabelle and Hiran regions.
In January and February, the militants attempted to open supply routes through Beera Yabaal in Hiran. These offensives were thwarted by Somali government forces and local fighters, resulting in heavy casualties. According to Voice of America, over 100 people, most of them militants, were killed in the clashes.
Shift in Strategy
After failing in Hiran, Al-Shabaab shifted focus to Middle Shabelle. Fighters crossed via a makeshift bridge near the village of Oobaale, moved east, and passed north of Mahaday district, flooding into Adan Yabaal. Meanwhile, a separate Al-Shabaab column passed through Yaaqle.
On February 26, Al-Shabaab launched a diversionary attack on Bal’ad town, likely as a decoy to distract Somali and African Union forces from their movements toward Adan Yabaal.
International Support and Resistance
The Somali military campaign continues to receive support from local militias, the United States military, and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). However, Al-Shabaab continues to demonstrate resilience, maintaining control of key territories and resisting ongoing military pressure.
Implications
The fall of Adan Yabaal could embolden Al-Shabaab and complicate future military operations in central and southern Somalia. The town’s strategic location makes it a critical loss, and observers warn that retaking it will require renewed coordination and international support.
