MOGADISHU, Somalia – Heavy clashes erupted overnight in Garbahaarey, the capital of Somalia’s Gedo region, after Al-Shabaab militants launched a surprise assault on a government military base, local sources report.
The militants specifically targeted a government outpost on the outskirts of the town, triggering a fierce, hours-long gun battle. Speaking to Horn Life, some residents said both sides exchanged heavy gunfire, but the full extent of the casualties remains unclear at this stage.
Security officials confirmed that government forces managed to repel the attack, killing several of the militants and regaining control over the affected areas. They added that operations are ongoing to secure the surroundings.
Tensions remain high across Garbahaarey. This morning, government troops launched sweep operations in nearby areas in an effort to prevent further attacks.
In the days leading up to the assault, Al-Shabaab fighters had been gathering near Baardheere and Garbahaarey, raising concerns among local residents. However, swift action by government forces helped thwart the militants’ plans.
Gedo has long been one of the regions where Al-Shabaab maintains an active presence, regularly carrying out ambushes, bombings, and assassinations.
The security challenges are compounded by political tensions between Somalia’s federal government and the Jubbaland administration, which have recently resurfaced in Beledxaawo. The growing instability has worsened the humanitarian situation for many families in the region.
