Somalia: Al-Shabaab Launches Mortar Attack on Military Base Near Kenya Border

MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a pre-dawn assault, Al-Shabaab militants targeted a Somali National Army (SNA) base in the Elwaq district of Gedo region, close to the Kenyan border, with a mortar attack, local sources confirmed to The Horn Life. The attack, which commenced with mortar fire, was met with immediate gunfire response from the government forces stationed at the base.

According to reports, several mortar shells landed within the military camp, prompting a brief skirmish. Despite the attack, Somali military officials assured that no casualties were reported among the troops. They also claimed prior knowledge of the impending assault, which allowed them to prepare and minimize the impact.

Following the attack, SNA forces initiated operations to pursue and locate the Al-Shabaab fighters responsible. While Al-Shabaab has not publicly detailed their losses or the success of their operation, they confirmed targeting the military installation in Elwaq.

This incident is part of a broader pattern where Al-Shabaab frequently targets government and African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) bases, particularly in regions where they contest control. The Gedo region, known for its strategic importance and previous clashes, continues to be a focal point for such militant activities.

The attack underscores the ongoing security challenges in Somalia, where despite efforts by the government and international forces, Al-Shabaab maintains significant influence through guerrilla tactics and targeted strikes.
