MOGADISHU, Somalia – Al-Shabaab has suffered a major blow after 23 Al-Shabaab militants were killed and dozens wounded in a covert operation by Somali troops on Tuesday amid a stepped-up ground offensive in the country.
In a statement, NISA – National Intelligence and Security Agency known as [NISA] said the operation targeted an Al-Shabaab hideout in Dhararweyn, which lies on the outskirts of Galcad town within Galgadud region under Galmudug state.
During the raid, three vehicles that the slain militants were traveling in were burnt down. Several fighters who escaped from the operation are at large and are being chased, said NISA in the statement obtained by the HornLife.
Despite losses, Al-Shabaab remains a potent threat to Somali security and the Horn of Africa.
This is part of an ongoing military operation that aims to flush Al-Shabaab out of the remaining areas in the south and central regions of Somalia, according to the government, which is supported by the U.S., Turkey, and AU in the war.
