MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Intelligence and Security Agency [NISA] announced it carried out a cover operation in the country’s southern Middle Shabelle region, targeting a key Al-Shabaab gathering site.
The 12-hour-long NISA operation in the Yaaqle area led to the elimination of at least 27 Al-Shabaab fighters and wounded several others, while battle wagons were destroyed, according to the statement released on Sunday.
NISA did not provide further details on the casualties inflicted upon its soldiers during the raid and there was no independent source confirming the claims.
The Intelligence agency has been playing a vital role in the current Somali army operation against Al-Shabaab which saw the liberation of dozens of towns and villages since the launch in mid-2022 under the directive of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Somalia is facing the threat of Al-Shabaab and is now preparing for a new AU peacekeeping mission that is slated to start in January next year with Egypt contributing troops to the AUSSOM, which replaces the ATMIS that ends on December 31.
