Somalia: Explosion Targets President’s Convoy in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A powerful roadside bomb exploded today on Ceel Gaabta road in the Xamar Jajab district of Mogadishu, targeting the convoy of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The explosion, which occurred as the president was traveling to the frontlines in the Middle Shabelle region, resulted in casualties and damage.

At least four people, including two journalists, were killed and eight others were injured, seven of whom were part of the president’s security team. The blast damaged several vehicles, including three armored cars in the presidential convoy.

The blast is believed to have been an assassination attempt on the president. The bomb was reportedly concealed beneath a building along the road. Somali security forces, including police and intelligence personnel, quickly secured the area and initiated an investigation, examining local surveillance footage to determine the details of the attack.

While the investigation is ongoing, initial reports suggest that the explosion was aimed at killing President Mohamud, who was unharmed in the attack. One of the president’s motorcade vehicles was damaged in the explosion. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the bombing.
