MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali federal forces, supported by local militias, launched a major military operation on Monday targeting Al-Shabaab militants in the Aboorey area of the Hiiraan region.
The offensive, which focused on mountainous areas between Yasooman and Aboorey, reportedly inflicted heavy casualties on the militants. According to a government statement, troops disrupted a planned Al-Shabaab attack after receiving intelligence on militant activities.
“The operation targeted a group of Khawarij militants who had been hiding in the area in an attempt to regroup,” the statement said, using the government’s term for Al-Shabaab.
Government forces claimed a significant victory, pushing Al-Shabaab out of strategic positions in the region. Movement remains tense across the area, with military patrols expanding toward Buulo-Burde district, local sources reported.
Aboorey is seen as a critical link for Al-Shabaab’s operations between Hiiraan, Middle Shabelle, and Galmudug regions. Recent months have seen repeated clashes there, as Somali forces and allied militias seek to cut off militant strongholds.
The government said today’s operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s remaining presence in central Somalia.
