ENTEBBE, Uganda — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud delivered a strong appeal for international backing during a key security summit in Entebbe, Uganda, where leaders of nations involved in the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) gathered alongside global partners.
Addressing the summit, President Hassan Sheikh emphasized the growing effectiveness of Somalia’s national forces in combating terrorism and called for sustained global investment in building the country’s security institutions. “We have seen real progress,” he noted, “but continued success depends on deepening our partnerships.”
The summit, hosted at the Ugandan State House, drew participation from heads of state and senior delegates representing Kenya, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Uganda, the United Nations, African Union, IGAD, the European Union, the UK, and the United States.
Joint declarations from the summit praised Somalia’s key milestones over the past year, including joining the East African Community, regaining voting rights at the UN Security Council, and launching reforms to prepare for direct elections. Leaders pledged increased training and resources for Somali forces, expanded aerial and intelligence support, and closer coordination between federal and regional governments.
“We are committed to rebuilding a strong, unified army that can fully take over national security,” the President added, reaffirming Somalia’s readiness to take the lead in peacekeeping and stabilization.
The summit also endorsed a renewed funding roadmap for AUSSOM, emphasizing long-term Somali ownership of security efforts. President Hassan Sheikh extended his gratitude to participating countries for their continued support and affirmed Somalia’s determination to restore lasting peace and security.
