MOGADISHU, Somalia – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has appointed his son, Abdifatah Hassan, as the Chief of the Presidential Guard, reliable sources have confirmed to Horn Life.
Abdifatah replaces Lieutenant Colonel Maslax Mahmoud Mohamed, who has been promoted to Commander of the Presidential Protection Brigade.
Abdifatah Hassan joined the Somali security forces during his father’s current term and has frequently been seen participating in his personal security detail, particularly on frontline missions. His appointment is widely seen as a move by the President to strengthen his personal security, especially after surviving a recent assassination attempt by the militant group Al-Shabaab.
However, questions have arisen regarding the basis of Abdifatah’s promotion, given the presence of other officers with over 15 years of service within the Presidential Guard.
Lieutenant Colonel Maslax Mahmoud Mohamed, who was appointed as Commander of the Presidential Protection Brigade, officially assumed his new role earlier this month in a ceremony held at the brigade’s headquarters, taking over from Major General Hassan Aden Dhicis.
In his inauguration speech, Commander Maslax outlined his plans to enhance security operations and ensure the protection of the Presidency and national leaders. He also expressed gratitude to his predecessor for his significant contributions while in office.
Maslax brings over 14 years of experience within the Somali National Armed Forces and had previously served as the Chief of the President’s Special Guard before his recent promotion.
