MOGADISHU, April 24, 2025 – Intense clashes broke out in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region on Thursday morning after Al-Shabaab militants launched an attack on the strategic Wargaadhi area under the control of the Somali army, local sources said.
The assault began with powerful explosions, followed by heavy fighting as both sides deployed various types of weapons, according to eyewitnesses. The situation remains highly volatile.
Wargaadhi, like the nearby Aadan Yabaal, is considered a strategically important area, where Somali federal government forces maintain a base. If captured, it will be the second key town in the region that falls into Al-Shabaab’s hands this month.
Aadan Yabaal was retaken by Al-Shabaab from the Somali government last week, the biggest blow to the military operation in the south and central regions of Somalia.
