MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Federal parliament divided over a one-month request to debate and pass new bills related to new election reforms made by President Hassan Sheikh Hassan, who addressed the legislative house on Saturday.
While the majority of the lawmakers accepted the president’s request for the extended sessions, there are a group of opposition MPs, including Dahir Amin Jesow, who accused the presidency of working on the impossible popular vote in the country, citing current security and political crisis.
Jesow also blamed the speaker of the Lower House Chamber Aden Madobe for championing a contentious electoral law that will create trouble for the Parliament and the country. The legislators who voted in favour of the president’s request are serving in the cabinet.
The President appealed to the members of Parliament with a request to extend the session by one month, which means the lawmakers will not go on recess until they complete the approval of the Villa Somalia’s mission.
On the other hand, the MP Yusuf Gama’diid from Himilo Qaran party side of Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed ruled out the plans of Villa Somalia arguing that free and fair elections can’t take place at this time in Somalia.
“It was a lie, the truth deprived it, and there will be no one person one vote election; it’s not likely,” MP Yusuf Gama’diid said.
This deadlock comes amidst the political tension that has been generated over the decisions made in the recent National Consultative Council meeting that were opposed by Puntland, Jubbaland and the opposition.
