Somalia: Local Trader Murdered in Mogadishu for Defying Al-Shabaab CCTV Ban

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A local trader, Abdinasir Dahir Diirshe, was shot dead last night in the Deynile district market, north of Mogadishu, by gunmen believed to be from the Al-Shabaab militant group. The incident occurred inside Diirshe’s business premises, where assailants armed with pistols executed the attack before fleeing the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported that Diirshe had recently been threatened by Al-Shabaab, allegedly due to the installation of CCTV cameras in his commercial property, contravening the group’s directives. Despite these threats, Diirshe chose to maintain the security measures, which ultimately led to his demise.

Security personnel responded to the scene but have not yet apprehended any suspects. The attack underscores the ongoing security challenges in Somalia, where Al-Shabaab often targets businesses complying with government mandates for increased surveillance.

Recent patterns show that Al-Shabaab has increasingly targeted commercial entities equipped with CCTV, following government orders to enhance security. These actions have not only resulted in the loss of life but have also instilled fear among traders who must choose between security regulations and their personal safety.

This incident adds to the tally of civilians caught in the crossfire between government forces and Al-Shabaab, highlighting the precarious balance between enforcing law and protecting citizens in conflict zones.
