MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Consultative Council meeting, previously announced by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, officially opened today at Villa Somalia. The gathering brings together leaders from the Federal Government and several regional states to discuss pressing national issues.
President Mohamud chaired the session, which was attended by the leaders of Galmudug, HirShabelle, South West State, SSC-Khaatumo, and the Banadir Regional Administration. Key topics include national security and preparations for the 2026 elections.
Sources say much of the discussion is expected to center on the fight against Al-Shabaab, which has recently intensified its activities in the Shabelle regions, posing a renewed threat near the capital.
Today’s session was largely an opening round, during which the leaders exchanged updates on recent political and security developments. Deeper discussions on the main agenda items are expected in the coming days.
Notably absent were the presidents of Jubbaland and Puntland, who have distanced themselves from the federal government’s current approach, particularly concerning constitutional reforms and the electoral process.
Opposition figures have also voiced concerns over the ongoing voter registration process for the one-person, one-vote system, arguing that it lacks broad political consensus.
International partners based in Mogadishu are currently engaged in efforts to mediate the political standoff, hoping to encourage dialogue and prevent further polarization.
The meeting comes at a time of heightened tension, both politically and in terms of security. Its outcome is being closely watched across the country as leaders seek common ground on Somalia’s path forward.
