Somalia PM’s Las Anod Visit Rekindles Hopes for SSC-Khaatumo’s Federal Recognition

LAS ANOD, Somalia – The historic trip to northern Somalia by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre could have as well paved the way for the recognition of SSC-Khatumo, which was formed following the ouster of Somaliland from Las Anod city in 2023.

During the trip, PM Hamza Barre revived SSC-Khatumo to the upcoming Federal Government and some Federal Member States summit, scheduled to take place on May 1st and 2nd. The last round of this NCC summit, held in October 2024, failed.

The invitation could be an indirect approval of the region as an interim federal state which is part of the National Consultative Council meetings. Mogadishu has lost significant support from Puntland and Jubaland, which are pursuing additional autonomy, having a rift with the government.

Somali PM Hamza Abdi Barre, speaking in Las Anod on Sunday night, announced that SSC-Khatumo is part of the Federal Republic, not a disputed territory.

“It filled me with joy and a sense of love to see the unity with which you preserved the cohesion and the flag of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Fortunately, tonight the blue flag is flying in many parts of the northern regions.

“We are at a time when the Somali people need peace and unity more than ever. My historic visit to Las Anod reflects the commitment to strengthening the unity and togetherness of the Somali people,” Barre said during the trip.

On his part, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said PM Barre traveled to Las Anod to create a space for a dialogue regarding the situation of the region, which remains unresolved. “Somaliland is part of Somalia and no one has ever appreciated nor receiving Palestinian people,” he added about US plans to solve the Middle East conflict.

But Somaliland has condemned the trip by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to SSC-Khatumo regions which is claimed by Hargeisa, noting that should conflicts escalate within the region, Mogadishu should take responsibility.

“The irresponsible trip made by the Prime Minister of Somalia to parts of Somaliland—any consequences that are to form it will be the responsibility of those who sent him,” said Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi’s spokesperson.

However, SSC-Khatumo leader Abdikhadir Ahmed Aw-Ali alias Firdhiye welcomed the visit, telling that the region is ready to work with Mogadishu to advance development projects. Currently, Somalia has five federal states namely: Puntland, Jubaland, Hirshabelle, Southwest, and Galmudug.

Today, both Jubaland and Puntland are distanced from the federal system, questioning the spirit of federalism under Hassan Sheikh’s administration while the Somaliland region works independently and is pursuing international recognition.
