MOGADISHU, Somalia – A wave of tension has gripped parts of Middle Shabelle’s Cadale district after two civilians were shot dead by armed men early Sunday in the village of Burdheere, according to local residents.
The victims were identified as Fanax Macalin Xabeeb, who worked for a local telecommunications company, and Muxudiin Caraale, an employee at a nearby water well. Both men were killed on the spot after being ambushed by gunmen who swiftly fled the area.
Residents familiar with the incident said the assailants are believed to have ties to the coastal town of Cadale, though no official confirmation has been issued by authorities.
The killings have sparked widespread anxiety across the area. Shops and public gathering places in Burdheere remained closed throughout the day, with many residents fearing the violence could escalate further.
“There’s a lot of fear right now. People are staying indoors and tensions are rising,” said a local elder who requested anonymity due to security concerns.
As of Sunday evening, no statements had been released by either the Cadale district administration or HirShabelle regional leaders in response to the incident.
Middle Shabelle has a history of clan-related violence, with multiple peace agreements failing to produce lasting stability. Efforts by the federal government to deploy security forces to the region have so far had limited impact, and several communities remain vulnerable to outbreaks of conflict.
Locals are now calling for immediate intervention and accountability, warning that without swift action, the situation could spiral out of control.
