MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Somali National Army (SNA) carried out a targeted operation in the early hours of Tuesday in the Southern Mudug region, killing 10 Al-Shabaab militants and destroying their hideouts near Qeycad village, the Defence Ministry announced.
SNA troops engaged the insurgents in a dawn raid, part of an intensified effort to curb the activities of Al-Shabaab, an al Qaeda-linked group that has waged a prolonged insurgency against the central government in Somalia.
“The operation was a success, resulting in the elimination of 10 terrorists and the destruction of their bases,” the Minister of Defence told reporters, adding that the army is now pursuing the remaining militants to consolidate gains in the area.
The operation reflects Somalia’s ongoing campaign to restore government authority and bring stability to regions plagued by insurgent violence. International support, including training and intelligence sharing, has been pivotal in enhancing the military’s effectiveness against Al-Shabaab.
Local residents expressed guarded hope that the military’s actions could lead to a reduction in attacks, fostering an environment conducive to development and peace. However, the persistence of Al-Shabaab in parts of Somalia remains a challenge to long-term security.
