MOGADISHU, Somalia — In a concerted effort to dismantle the remaining strongholds of Al-Shabaab in the Lower Shabelle region, Somali National Army troops have intensified military operations in recent days. The focus has been on the coastal stretch between Afgoye and Marka, areas known to be focal points for the militant group.
According to military officials, the troops have established new forward operating bases and checkpoints along this coastal corridor, aimed at thwarting potential Al-Shabaab incursions and securing the region.
The operations have not only involved tactical maneuvers but also led to the arrest of several individuals suspected of Al-Shabaab affiliations. These detainees are currently under investigation, with details of their involvement yet to be disclosed.
The strategic importance of Lower Shabelle lies in its history as a launching pad for many of Al-Shabaab’s attacks. The ongoing military push is part of a broader initiative to neutralize the group’s operational capabilities in the region.
Despite the government’s claims of operational success, Al-Shabaab has not commented on the military actions. The silence from the militant group comes as operations in Lower Shabelle continue, with a significant presence of both the Somali federal forces and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
These efforts underscore the federal government’s commitment to reclaiming control over territories within Somalia, particularly in regions like South West, where military presence has been reinforced to curb insurgent activities.
