Mogadishu (Horn Life) – Heavy fighting broke out on Thursday morning on the southern outskirts of Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, after al-Shabaab militants launched a surprise attack on government security forces stationed in the area.
The clashes occurred in Albiri, a settlement located between Siinka Dheer and Garasbaaley, following an ambush by the al-Qaeda–linked group targeting security personnel.
According to reliable security sources, the militants specifically attacked members of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) who were operating in the area. A brief but intense gun battle ensued, with both sides exchanging heavy fire before government forces regained control.
Medical sources confirmed that several soldiers were wounded and transported to Mogadishu hospitals for treatment.
Security officials said the attacking militants fled the scene, leaving behind a communication device believed to have been used for coordination during the assault.
The situation in Albiri has since returned to calm, as government troops launched search operations to secure the area and prevent further militant movement.
Al-Shabaab militants have in recent months carried out similar hit-and-run attacks along the Mogadishu–Afgoye road, particularly around Lafoole and Xaawo Cabdi, disrupting transport and threatening security.
In recent weeks, Somali security forces have intensified operations across the southern approaches to Mogadishu, deploying large numbers of troops to curb infiltration attempts and protect the capital from potential bomb plots.
