MOGADISHU, Somalia – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is set to officially open the 7th session of the 11th Federal Parliament today in Mogadishu, marking a significant moment in the country’s ongoing legislative and political process.

Both the Members of the House of the People (Lower House) and the Upper House (Senate) have been formally notified and summoned to attend this ceremonial opening at the Federal Parliament headquarters.

The event is expected to be attended by senior government officials, diplomats, and representatives of international partners.

In accordance with Article 90 of the Provisional Constitution of Somalia, it is the responsibility of the President to inaugurate each new session of Parliament.

During the opening ceremony, President Hassan Sheikh will deliver a comprehensive address outlining the Government’s achievements and challenges over the past parliamentary recess.

His speech is also expected to provide general policy guidance for the new session and outline national priorities for the coming months.

The 11th Parliament, which was inaugurated in April 2022, is now entering its final stretch, with less than eight months remaining in its current constitutional term.

This session is expected to be particularly important, as legislators prepare to review and possibly pass key articles and legislative proposals related to the national electoral process, among other critical governance and security issues.

As Somalia moves closer to pivotal national elections, both Houses of Parliament are anticipated to play a central role in shaping the legal and institutional frameworks necessary to ensure credible, inclusive, and timely electoral processes.

This parliamentary session comes at a time when Somalia is navigating complex challenges, including security operations against Al-Shabaab, economic recovery efforts, constitutional review processes, and federalization debates.

The President’s speech today is likely to touch on many of these issues, signaling the government’s legislative agenda and strategic priorities for the months ahead.
